Rain Garden: Just Say “No” to Watering

I like to conserve resources, like… effort.  Take the rain garden I recently finished building.  Sure, I shoveled and wheelbarrowed a dump truck’s worth of soil, and hand-built a thirty foot long retaining wall.  But, once I get the flowers planted in the springtime, I will never, ever have to drag our heavy hose around to water them.

A rain garden, for those who are unfamiliar with the term, is a garden intentionally designed so that rainwater collects and pools within its boundaries.  The water then slowly infiltrates the ground, feeding plants and trees nearby.  The plants in the rain garden are chosen from species that naturally occur in such areas, so not only can they withstand periodic flooding, but their deep roots allow them to survive in dry times just as well.  You get a beautiful flower garden without the bother of watering; it’s the ultimate in lazy gardening.

The frugal gardener reusing found materials

Truth be told, I didn’t put all that work into a rain garden just because I’m lazy.  You know the expression, “when life hands you a lemon….”?  When my wife and I bought our first home recently, it had serious grading issues.  That was how the rain garden started.

First, there was the driveway.  Whatever contractor thought a vehicle could climb such a ridiculous grade in icy weather ought to have to park on one all winter—or perhaps for all eternity (insert evil cackle here).

Then, there was the rainwater draining toward the foundation of the house–on three sides.  We noticed it one night when outside it was raining, but inside we had puddles.

We hired contractors to dig into the sloping front yard and put in a new, flat driveway (of rainwater-permeable crushed stone).  Remember the lemon?  Here’s the lemonade: we had them leave most of the soil behind.

I used a lot of it to build up around our foundation.  This, and a shallow swale I dug into our back lawn, solved the indoor puddle problem.  But the majority of the soil went to the lowest side of our back yard, in the form of a long berm designed to hold and pool the yard’s rainwater.  It became one side of our eventual rain garden.

Beginnings of the rain garden

The digging begins. The berm (at right) retains water from the swale (bottom left).

A lot of stones, old bricks and pavers were dug up, sorted and stacked to one side during all this work.  This autumn, my wife and I were finally able to dig the rain garden to its proper depth.  I dry-laid the bricks, pavers and stones to build a retaining wall on its upslope side.  The soil from digging went on the high side of the wall, and helped to level our yard.

Test run

With the stone wall halfway complete, a storm obliged us with a test run.

My next door neighbor’s bags of raked leaves volunteered their way all over the completed rain garden’s floor.  (The neighbors were mystified when the empty bags reappeared on their doorstep.)  Over the winter, the leaves will break down as nature’s compost.  In the spring, we will plant flowers.

The completed rain garden

The completed rain garden

The flowers going into our rain garden will be native to our area.  I believe strongly in gardening with natives.  After all, my wife and I really like seeing birds, butterflies and other living things in our yard, and native plants best support the whole web of indigenous and interdependent life forms that comprise our ecosystem.

Incidentally, all the rainwater from our yard is now being put to use.  In the back yard, it all goes into the rain garden.  In the front yard, downspout tubes divert it onto our sloped front lawn, which of course we will never have to water.

Water goes in here...and out here.

Water from the downspout enters a buried PVC pipe, and exits under a stone in the rain garden.

Among all the small creatures living in our yard these days, we spotted our first Monarch butterfly caterpillar this summer.  It promptly ate most of the leaves off two of our milkweed plants.  We take this as proof that our native plant garden is doing what we want, and helping to conserve our local ecology.  That’s the kind of conservation my wife and I believe in most of all.

Let’s Celebrate!

Inside the new Waldorf MOMs!

MOMs has so much to celebrate this time of year: We’ve got our new Waldorf store’s grand opening tomorrow through Sunday.  After a tricky planning & setting phase, and major storm threats, we’re thrilled to have the support of the community in getting this store off the ground!  We cracked the doors today so drop in if you’re in the neighborhood!

We had a lot of fun for Halloween, which was a bit of a surprise since we were braced for the storm, and as it turns out, many people were able to pull together some fun costumes for our costume contest. Even the Waldorf crew that was hard at work setting up displays were decked out in fanciful attire!

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and we enjoy this holiday so much because of the food, of course.  Its a time when our customers and employees pull out their family recipes, stock up on traditional foods, and spend a lot of time in the kitchen cooking with their families. We always meet new customers this time of year, mostly those that are seeking spectacular ingredients and end up in our aisles, relieved to finally find them.

The turkey orders have started and the deadline will be Sat Nov 17th.  Pick-up of pre-ordered turkeys will be on Mon Nov 19, Tues Nov 20, and Wed Nov 21.  The turkey order period is a bonding experience in the stores, with employees banding together to fine-tune processes, and learning all the locations of unique holiday ingredients.

On a not-so happy note, we were disappointed to see Prop 37 get shot down in California.  This would have been an important step in educating consumers about the food they buy, and giving them the choice to avoid or support GMO ingredients at the shelf.  Our consolation is that our customers & employees vote every day on this issue – in the purchases they make – by choosing certified organic foods!

We’ve got some great holiday gifts coming in to the stores this season, including Big Dipper Wax Works candles, which are surely the best candles available anywhere in the world!  Also, check out new designs of the wool-felt ornaments and fair trade goodies from Tibet Collection, sourced from refugee-artisan cooperatives and organizations in Nepal.  You’ll see some new designs from Greenfield Paper Company on their ever-popular Grow-a-Note cards, which will sprout with just a little water and sun in the Spring, and are made from recycled paper with seeds embedded.

Here’s to a great season! *Clink*

Southern Maryland – Here We Come!

The MOMs crew is hard at work, setting up the soon-to-open Waldorf store in Southern Maryland!  You can expect grand opening festivities on Nov 9th, 10th & 11th, including kids activities, free samples, goody bags, raffles, henna tattooing and lots of delicious food!

The new Waldorf store is located at 3301 Plaza Way, Waldorf MD 20306.   Its right off of Route 301/Crain Highway.  Nearby, there’s a Kids First Swim, which is a great little spot for kids swimming lessons.

We’re also near a Chipotle (on 301), Giant, Waldorf Fitness Center, and Capital Clubhouse recreation center which has ice skating, rock-climbing and other fun activities to keep your blood flowing!
Waldorf MOMs will sport the tell-tale signs of a MOMs store: eco-friendly materials like a customer service desk made from sustainable bamboo, no-frills decor like a polished concrete floor (no excessive waste and chemicals needed for maintenance), extensive recycling area (for compost, plastic recycling, light bulbs, batteries, etc), free fair-trade coffee station, all-LED lighting all over the store, and of course, it will be wind-powered like all of our other locations!

If you’re interested in working for MOMs, be sure to see our available job openings, and check back frequently as we change them weekly.

Hope you’ll stop in for the Grand Opening events on Nov 9th, 10th & 11th!

Countdown to Merrifield! …and Directions

Its hard to believe that Merrifield MOMs will be open tomorrow (grand opening this weekend), after so many months of dreaming, planning, and preparing.

The sign guy puts finishing touches on our door logo.

As always, our employee crew is churning away, stocking products, beautifying displays and practicing systems to make sure everything will go smoothly.  The Merrifield location really proves that MOMs is growing up!  Thanks to decades of support from our near-fanatic customers we’re able to open a gorgeous store with all the bells and whistles (well, we’re still minimalists at heart, mind you).

Everyone is invited to scamper over to Merrifield this weekend (starting tomorrow) to see for yourselves!  A word about directions (there’s some construction around the center) since it may not come up on your GPS:

The store is in the Mosaic District on the corner of Lee Highway and Eskridge, not far from the Gallows Rd & Lee Hwy intersection.  If you’re using google maps or a GPS, try searching for 2900 Eskridge Rd zip 22031 and it should lead you right there.  We’re directly across from Home Depot on Eskridge Rd.  If you take the little alley out front (Glass Alley), you’ll find tons of easy free (!) parking on your right side.

From Annandale: Take Gallows Rd (Rt 650 North) towards Merrifield, cross Rt 50, and take a left on Lee Highway (Rt 29/237 West), and take a left on Eskridge Rd.  Take a left after the median and the free parking garage is immediately on your left.  Or try this.

From Arlington: Take Arlington Blvd (Rt 50 West) towards Merrifield, make a right on Gallows Rd (Rt 650 North), and take a left on Lee Highway (Rt 29/237 W), and take a left on Eskridge Rd.  Take a left after the median and the free parking garage is immediately on your left.  Or try this.

From Fairfax: Take Rt 29 East/North (which is also Rt 50 there) towards Merrifield, stay on Rt 29/237 (East/North) when Rt 50 splits off.  Pass Prosperity Ave (699) and make a right on Eskridge Rd and a right into Glass Alley and proceed into the free parking garage on your right. Or try this.

From Vienna: Take Nutley St (Rt 243 South) towards Rt 66.  Pass Rt 66.  Make a left on Lee Hwy (Rt 29/237 East/North). Pass Prosperity Ave (699) and make a right on Eskridge Rd and a right into Glass Alley and proceed into the free parking garage on your right.  Or try this.

From Tyson’s Corner: Take Chain Bridge Rd (Rt 123 South) towards Vienna.  Make a left onto Old Courthouse Rd (Rt 677).  Turn right on Gallows Rd (Rt 650 South).  Turn right onto Lee Hwy (Rt 29 S/237 W).  Take a left onto Eskridge, and a left after the median, free parking garage immediately on your left.  Or try this.

Come check out the festivities this weekend: recycle your old shoes and electronics, get free samples & goody bags, enter raffles, and get your kids involved in some fun activities.  Don’t forget to save room for lunch at our Naked Lunch counter where everything is organic: kombucha on tap, raw juices, steam bowls, black bean burgers, hummus & cilantro sandwiches, and even veggie-loaded salads.

Check out the pics from our final stocking day:

Naked Lunch counter is *the* spot for organic noshing.

Stocking like crazy!

Lunchtime: At MOMs we know how to eat well.

Can’t wait to get our fresh produce tomorrow morning!

Are the customers here yet?!

The Wellness team takes a minute to learn about new products.

A sign of which we’re very proud, ready to be hung.

Brian gets high at work. In a good way.

Great wine & beer, lots of local and specialty varieties.

Howard leaps through a black hole into a finished store!

Finally! MOMs in Merrifield.. and Tips for Shopping at MOMs

Thursday is the big day! MOMs in Merrifield will open at the Mosaic District at Lee Hwy & Gallows Rd in Fairfax, Virginia.  Here’s our detailed map.

Merrifield MOMs is possibly our most exciting venue to date — as always, its full of environmentally-compatible materials, and its designed to help support a comfortable, low-stress shopping experience for our customers.

Almost open!

Plus, its nestled in the Mosaic District (a LEED Silver certified center), which appears to be shaping up into a great little spot for noshing, sipping, catching an interesting flick, acquiring great clothes, and scoring some deals on cool finds.  A modern layout to the center makes it comfortable to visit.

And here are my tips for shopping at MOMs:

We compost!  Everything.  Even of our utensils, cups, and produce bags are compostable, so don’t expect a lot of trash cans around 🙂

We don’t sell bottled water!  We banned that stuff.  Instead, we’ll give you a free gallon of reverse-osmosis highly-filtered water (in your own container, which you can purchase if you need) on each visit, and its only 39 cents for each gallon after that.  There are single compostable cups (with lids and straws) of the same water available for you for free in the drink case if you just want a portable sip.  You won’t miss having to buy it, promise.

We are very serious about providing the lowest prices.  Please let us know if you are unsatisfied with a price in our store.  We’ve paid continuous attention to make sure that shopping at MOMs for your month’s groceries will cost you significantly less than a batch of organic groceries from another retailer.

We are very proud to be 100% wind-powered.  We purchase more wind-power than the energy we use in all our locations combined, and we know this helps support demand for wind power in our neighborhood and worldwide.

We have so much fun at work, and we work very hard. If you are interested in working for MOMs, check out our job postings regularly because we update all the time!

We prefer to carry your bags to your car, if that’s okay with you.  If its not, just say no thanks!  This practice helps keep shopping carts from blocking up the parking lot and getting damaged… plus we like to help you out!

You can contact the founder and CEO of MOMs, Scott, if you have a compliment, concern, suggestion or idea.  He considers every one of them.  His direct line is .301. 767..9433., or you can email him at scott@momsorganicmarket.com and tell him what’s up.  Also, see his blog: ScottsCompostPile.com.  If you prefer, you can contact the General Manager of your nearest MOMs from our website.

Um.. what else? Oh – We carry a lot of exceptional local produce, beer, meat, cheese, dairy, and goodies, but we highly favor certified organic local foods.  Self-explanatory, I guess.

We carry only sustainable seafood.  We don’t mess around with selling nearly-extinct fish when there are some great, highly-palatable seafood that are sustainably caught (although its a bit limited, which should tell us all something!  But supporting sustainable seafood helps bring back variety over time by reducing over-fishing).

You can download e-coupons from a few brands on our website, and you can pick up another set of coupons at our Customer Service desk to get awesome deals on all sorts of food and sundries.

Don’t forget to hold on to your receipt if its over $25 and you can take it to Green Festival DC Sept 29 & 30 for 2 free weekend passes.  We’ll see you there!

Last, but definitely not least: We sell only 100% certified organic [GORGEOUS] produce in our stores.  No exceptions.  We take very special care of our produce and our customers tell us it lasts longer than anyone else’s organic produce around here. We pick up produce from many small local organic farms in Damascus, MD, Gen Allen, VA, and more than 7 other (very) nearby farms.  Check twitter @momsorganicmrkt for near-daily photos and top picks of the produce in our stores.

I’m probably forgetting all kinds of great stuff!  If you have tips for newcomers to MOMs, please leave a comment!  I hope we’ll see you this weekend (starting Thursday!).

I’ll put up a few pics of the hard-work-in-progress at the new MOMs:

Green Festival DC is September 29 & 30!

There are so many fun and enlightening events around the DC area every year, and we’re fortunate to have one of the best coming up at the end of this month!

Green Festival is a huge event at the Washington DC Convention Center.  It includes a dizzying variety of local businesses that are environmentally-focused, from lawn care by A.I.R Lawn Care, to eco-home improvement with Amicus Green Building Center, to must-have resources like Holistic Moms Network, eco driving experts from Earth Garage, and even fairtrade handmade global fashion designs from Safa Gallery.  Its always amazing to see how much is right around our own neighborhood that can help us save energy & money, reduce waste, reuse everyday items, and support social equality.

Perhaps one of the most important parts of Green Festival DC is the main stage speakers who help inspire and educate us about our lives and businesses.  This year is sure to be a show-stopper with great talks given by Amy Goodman, award-winning investigative journalist, founder and host of Democracy Now!; Benjamin Todd Jealous, president of NAACP; Elizabeth Kucinich, Director of Government Affairs, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and co-producer of GMO Film Project; Laura Theodore, television and radio host, vegan chef, sustainable lifestyle blogger, cookbook author, and award-winning jazz singer and actor – The Jazzy VegetarianDr. Benjamin Chavis, Chairman and

CEO of The Hip Hop Summit Action Network, civil rights leader and former NAACP Executive Director; Medea Benjamin, social justice advocate and co-founder of CODEPINK and Global Exchange; Ralph Nader, consumer advocate, author, lawyer and former Presidential Candidate; and many more.

Besides these (and 120 more) great speakers you’ll find an eco-fashion showcase, a green pet stage, a green business stage, a community action stage, a fair-trade stage, a DIY stage and live art demonstration!

The kids will also find fun activities and games in the Green Kids Zone.  Free yoga classes at the Yoga and Movement Pavilion, and short environmental films at the Sierra Club Green Cinema are sure to fascinate.  And the Good Food Stage will provide cooking and nutrition tips.

Just in case that wasn’t enough to get you revved up – MOMs will be there!  In fact, you can get 2 FREE weekend passes to Green Festival DC simply by making a $25 purchase at any MOMs in SeptemberBring your receipt to the entry gate & we’ll see you there!

Summer Re-Cap

As summer slowly comes to an end, the kids are gathering supplies for school, and the heat is dwindling to a dull roar, we’re reflecting on a great summer: MOMs relocated our original store in Rockville to a wonderful space on Randolph Rd, we celebrated our 25th Anniversary during a local power blackout, and we’re looking forward to many exciting changes to come this fall, including the much-anticipated opening of our Merrifield VA store in September, and our Waldorf MD store opening in Oct/Nov.

We’re geared up to attend the DC GreenFest Sept 29-30, which is always one of our favorite local events. MOMs’ customers can obtain 2 free weekend passes to GreenFest DC by making a $25 purchase at MOMs in September and checking their receipt for details.

We were tickled and delighted to be featured in the summer issue of one of our favorite local publications, Flavor Magazine! http://flavormagazinevirginia.com/

We’ve got tons of awesome job openings, waiting for hard-working, smart people who want a great job with a great company!  Apply here: http://momsorganicmarket.iapplicants.com/searchjobs.php

MOMs thanks our exceptional customers for a fun and exciting summer!  We’re looking forward to an even more exciting Fall!
